With this article we aimed to focus on the growing problems caused by climate change regarding the management of grape ripening and harvest time decision as a result of rapidly rising temperatures, particularly during the summer season and its effects on the chemical composition of the grape cluster. To enable a better understanding of the impacts of rising temperatures, low rainfall and mild winters on final grape quality, we will consider some of the most important varieties at the production level in Italy.

In recent years, several Italian scientific universities have conducted multi-year experimental trials to study the side effects of climate change on the agricultural sector, focusing particularly on the wine industry. These studies have collected important data highlighting the significant impacts of climate change on this major production chain. Adverse effects include changes in rainfall patterns, rising temperatures, and changes in vine physiological response. These findings emphasize the urgent need for adaptation and mitigation strategies to protect the wine sector and ensure the long-term sustainability of wine production.

For this reason, we will also address a quick consideration of harvest 2022 with a look at the upcoming harvest 2023 and how the effects of climate change are intensifying year after year posing a major challenge to preserve flavor and quality profiles throughout Italy.

As we well know, climate change impacts the entire wine supply chain, and therefore with this article we want to address in particular medium/small producers who have, especially in the production phase, limited means to cope with climatic effects and it is therefore essential to maintain frequent monitoring in pre-harvest in order to minimize correction interventions in the cellar. We also address more structured, medium-to-large producers, probably with more ability to diversify across the entire production process, but who in the long run would experience a significant loss of quality on the final product.  However, in addition to understanding the effects of climate change, the accurate data management of analysis information on ripening grapes is crucial to enable greater efficiency, traceability and possibility of comparison between different harvests.

In this context, the innovative and patented platform SMΔRT ANALYSIS is useful for obtaining crucial information and making data-driven decisions and represents a valuable technological tool to support the producer,

Specifically, SMΔRT ANALYSIS, enables the Cloud service to synchronize and manage in an organized way the results of chemical analysis of ripening grapes and to monitor seasonal trends.

This innovation provides crucial support to address the challenges related to climate change and promotes the sustainability and competitiveness of the wine sector. If you are a wine producer interested in preserving the high quality of your products and facing the challenges of climate change in a positive way, SMΔRT ANALYSIS is an innovative and reliable solution.
