The interest in the wine industry in the CIELab analysis is growing steadily, as evidenced by its introduction into the Franciacorta Rosé production specification by the Italian consortium in order to define its typical color.

This trend will be followed by other consortia and has important implications for the wine industry. For this very reason, DNAPhone has recently developed a software for color analysis in response to the numerous requests from structured wineries and analytical laboratories. The software is designed for those who wish to use the CIELab method for color analysis, using their own laboratory instruments.

This resulted in ColorLab, a universal advanced color analysis web APP, i.e., that can be used with any benchtop spectrophotometer or colorimeter, integrating numerical and graphical data processing functions specific to enology.

ColorLab allows importing data from any spectrometer generating csv or Excel text file. Once the file is loaded, by selecting the WINE supply chain, the software automatically calculates CIELab coefficients according to the OIV-MA-AS2-11 reference method, reporting calculations and methods employed; this allows the laboratory to validate wine color analysis according to that method.

ColorLab‘s customized work environment allows the laboratory or winery manager to create intuitive graphs to facilitate data interpretation, highlighting significant effects or those difficult to visualize otherwise. The innovative graphical representation is one of the distinguishing features of this software as it allows one to interpret CIELab numerical coefficients even if one is not familiar with them, providing much more information and decision-making tools than the old 420, 520, 620nm method.

In addition, ColorLab features ad-hoc functional modules that allow you to monitor the color characteristics of samples over time, from grapes to aging wines and throughout the entire winemaking process (including pressing fractions, use of fining agents, and more), or to quantitatively measure color differences.

At the end of a work session, all data is saved in the cloud on the user’s personal page, ready to be accessed at any time, and from where it is possible to generate downloadable reports that can be shared with customers or colleagues.
