A system for pre-harvest grading of winemaking grapes on the basis of anticipated wine quality, based on aerial IR imaging of the vineyard and selective vine sampling, is described, on the basis of trials in vineyards in Spain. Trials showed that this system worked well; quality was improved and results of microvinification and industrial winemaking agreed well. This system is used to set payments for grapes before harvest. The system was found to work better for Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah than for Tempranillo. (We recommend that you consult the full text of this article).
