VII International Symposium Mediterranean Malvasias

27 – 30 September 2023, Dubrovnik – Cavtat, Croatia

The VII International Symposium “Mediterranean Malvasias”, which will be held in the Hotel “Croatia” in Cavtat, Croatia, September 27th – 30th, 2023.

Numerous varieties of the Malvasia grapevine have been producing excellent wines throughout the Mediterranean for centuries, thereby contributing to the recognition of Mediterranean enogastronomy and the Mediterranean way of life in general.

Malvasia have been intriguing the professional and scientific public for years with numerous unknowns – how many are there and are they related? By what “key” did different varieties get the same or similar name? Where do they come from? In what ways did they spread and how did they become one of the world’s oldest and most famous wine brands? For this reason, since 2005, the “Mediterranean Malvasias” symposium has been held in various Mediterranean countries, where the professional and scientific public learned about the latest research on grape and wine production, as well as the historical, cultural and social aspects of the cultivation of these varieties in the Mediterranean.

In Croatia too, these varieties have an important economic, but also historical and cultural significance. Thus, Malvasia from Istria is the second most common grape variety in Croatia, and Malvasia from Dubrovnik has a very rich history, whose name is mentioned as far back as the 14th century and is still an important part of Dubrovnik’s cultural and natural heritage. It is a great pleasure to organize this meeting in Dubrovnik, a city with an exceptional history, one of the symbols of the Mediterranean. The goal is to bring together scientists and experts, producers, sommeliers and consumers: all those who can contribute in various ways to the improvement of our knowledge about these valuable varieties and wines.

Plenary lecturers at this meeting will be eminent scientists from different countries who will give an introductory overview of the latest knowledge and experiences with “Malvasia” from different Mediterranean countries, and through other oral and poster presentations we expect the results of recent scientific, professional and promotional/marketing activities.

In addition, interesting professional visits and events have been organised, which will bring You closer to the area of Dubrovnik and its wines.
