A study on six grape varieties (Chasselas, Pinot blanc, Arvine, Gamay, Syrah and Humagne rouge) was set up by the Agroscope Changins-Wädenswil ACW research station at an experimental estate in Leytron (Valais), in order to make a comparison between the viticultural and oenological characteristics of old and young vines. The old vines were more than thirty years old and young vines between four and eight years, these coming from the same vegetative material as the old vines. The impact of vine age on physiological behaviour was outlined in a recent article. The results on the agronomic behaviour and grape and wine quality are given in this publication.
