The diatomaceous earth, normally used as adjuvant for wine filtration, must be handled carefully in order to avoid problems (irreversible damage to the respiratory apparatus) for operator’s health. Experimental trials performed in some north eastern Italian cellars pointed out a dangerous concentration of such products in air, exceeding the threshold limits. In order to avoid health problems to the operators , the Author underlines the necessity to adopt severe measures during diatomaceous earth handling. Operators might be equipped with personal protection devices such as protection lenses and masks or “shield lotions” for hands. An important role is covered by the staff professional formation. Staff must be provided of the necessary information concerning the correct procedures for diatomaceous earth handling. Avoid diatomaceous earth spilling from the bags during the storage and during handling as well is a must. Water cleaning and aspiration systems are to be preferred to other cleaning systems of the cellars. (We suggest you to read the entire article.
