Connection matters: understanding the effect of graft quality on growth and grapevine-water relations and wine production

Grafting of Vitis vinifera L. (traditional wine cultivars) onto North American vine species or hybrids is normally used in most vine-growing areas to combat phylloxera (Daktulosphairavitifoliae), since many of the American Vitis species are tolerant to this soilborne pest. Bench grafting in nurseries has evolved from previous production schemes, and omega-type grafting has become the most widely used grafting technique.

This technique has supplanted other grafting methods due to its high productivity, relatively low skill requirement and ease of semi-mechanization. However, producing plants at high speed with low-skilled labor can result in low-yielding plants. Therefore, the decrease in vineyard longevity observed in most viticultural regions of the world where bench-grafted plants are used could be partially explained by the low quality of material produced in nurseries.

Learn the importance of exploring the effect of graft quality on vine water relations to identify how changes in plant performance could help achieve resilient plants to water stress or drought in this first scientific study that developed an experimental procedure to evaluate the implication of alignment at the graft point on vine physiology and water consumption.
