Grafted vines: X-Ray Tomography for assessing the quality and use of microorganism against the wood pathogens

This week we offer you two more very interesting short speeches from the first Enoforum Web Conference, where the results of research on the assessment of grafted vines quality through the use of  X-Ray Tomography and the use of microorganism against the wood pathogens were presented.

The production of grafted vines is a complex process from grafting to final sorting in nurseries. It’s still difficult to evaluate the internal quality of the junctions of grafted grapevines reaching the market. Anne-Sophie Spilmont from IFV will demonstrate the potential of X-ray tomography, commonly used in medicine, as a tool to assess the quality of the graft union of the grafted vines in her presentation "X-Ray Tomography: a promising tool to assess the selection of good quality grafted vines". 

Giuseppe Carella from the University of Florence in his work "Use of microorganisms in the disinfection/protection of organic rooted-cuttings from wood pathogens" assesses the effects of microorganism against the wood pathogens, with the objective of reducing the use of fungicides throughout the production cycle. The research is particularly focused on the nursery sector where it aims to improve both the phytosanitary state of the rooted-cuttings, and the qualitative aspect of the nursery material.
