Resistance of <i>V. vinifera</i> to Flavescence dorée, <i>Plasmopara viticola</i> and <i>Botrytis cinerea</i>

In these three videos we offer you the presentations of the works developed at Italian research centers and universities that present interesting discoveries related to flavescence dorée, Plasmopara viticola and Botrytis cinerea.

Flavescence dorée (FD) is one of the most serious diseases of the yellowing of the vine in Europe, the causative agent of which is an insect (Scaphoideus Titanus) that settles in the host's tissues.  Nadia Bertazzon of CREA (Italian Research Center for Viticulture and Oenology) presents "Mechanisms responsible for the different susceptibility of grape varieties to Flavescence dorée". This is a comparative study of two different varieties, one very susceptible to the disease and the other not very susceptible with the aim of revealing the mechanisms responsible for the different sensitivity of vine varieties to FD.

Growing resistant V. vinifera varieties would be a sustainable way to reduce the damage caused by downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) and the impact of disease management, which includes economic, health and environmental costs due to frequent fungicide applications.  Silvia Toffolatti of the University of Milan presents her work entitled "Unique resistance characteristics against downy mildew from the vine domestication center," which reports the discovery of unique traits of resistance to downy mildew in a vine cultivar of the domestication center.

Still aiming for sustainable viticulture, the research by Gicele Sbardelotto De Bona of the University of Padua entitled “Dual modality of action against Botrytis cinerea from vine branch extracts” is very interesting. The raw extracts of the V. vinifera shoots represent a natural source of stilbenic compounds with well characterized antifungal properties.  The research demonstrates how the application of the stilbene extracts could protect the vine plants from Botrytis cinerea (botrytis or gray mold).
