Grapevine xylem adaptation to drought studied by reflectance spectroscopy

Together with stomatal conductance and root conductivity, the stem water reserve and transport systems could be mechanisms able to participate in the regulation of the plant water status.

Lianas, such as Vitis spp., minimize the trunk support role, and stems have evolved to improve their ability in water transport.

This contribution summarizes two recent publications produced by this research team. The first experiment, carried out in 2014, demonstrated detectable changes in the reflectance spectra of grapevine woody tissues, caused by drought conditions.

In the second experiment, stems of 10 different Vitis species were studied and mathematical models were developed to predict the expected drought tolerance score. Furthermore, a method based on reflectance spectroscopy was developed to obtain a xylem hydrophobicity index.

Work presented at the International SIVE OENOPPIA awards 2017. The paper reproduced in this video-seminar was presented at the 10th edition of Enoforum (May 16th-18th, 2017, Vicenza, Italy)
