The objective of this work was to analyze the potential effect of climate change on the phenology and grape composition of Tempranillo and Garnacha varieties grown in DOCa Rioja (Spain).
The phenology and evolution of the grape composition during ripening were analyzed for the 2008-2018 period. This information included the dates of flowering, veraison and maturity and also probable alcohol, pH, total acidity, malic acid, total anthocyanins, total polyphenols index and color intensity, registered for the two varieties.
The climatic conditions recorded during the study period were evaluated from weather stations located near the vineyards. For the climatic conditions projected under two emission scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5), simulated using a set of 10 models, the averages of changes in temperature for the years 2050 and 2070 were analyzed. These data were obtained using MarkSim ™ DSSAT weather data generator.
The relationships currently found between the characteristics of the climate and the phenology and composition of the grapes were used to project the changes under climate change.
