ENOLOGY STUDENT AWARD “THE DAY AFTER” FROM ASEV 58TH ANNUAL MEETING

From microbial spoilage, wine sensory analysis, distilled spirits, measurement of oxygen and polyphenols, the ASEV annual meeting offered usual a great amount of useful information and is a good occasion to contact scientist and winemakers. One more time student mostly from United States Universities but also from New Zealand, and Denmark, presented their researches in the oral and poster presentations. In the student competition Robert Scholz and Melissa Sanborn received the award for the best oral presentation and poster respectively. Robert Scholz, a graduate student from UC Davis present his work on “Assessment of Fruit Tannins and Tanning-binding Capacity of Berry Cell Walls from Pinot noir by Clonal Selection and Site” in collaboration with Douglas Adams. Melissa Sanborn presented her poster in collaboration with Carolyn Ross and James Harbertson on “Impact of Fining on Sensory and Chemical Properties of Washington State Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer Wines”. Other students focused their attention on sensory and chemical composition of wine like Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon blanc, and Pinot noir. Interesting works on “lady bug” taint, effect of wine dilution on tannins analysis, electronic nose and fruit maturity, and culturability of Brettanomyces were also presented. The abstracts will be soon published in one of the next issues of the American Journal for Enology and Viticulture
